Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

When your cooling system breaks down, you're often faced with the choice of repairing your existing unit by having one or more of the components replaced or by purchasing a new air conditioner. Many air conditioning companies push clients to purchase new units because there is a higher profit margin in replacing existing equipment than there is in repairing it.
Dino Tech focuses on educating its Denver customers so that they themselves can make an informed decision regarding the replacement or the repair of an existing air conditioner. Often there's no absolute right or wrong answer. Repairs on an existing unit may be the least expensive immediate option, but may cost the customer more in the long run. Paying for repairs on an older, inefficient system simply prolongs the inevitable. An older system that breaks down once is likely to break down again. And it will consume more energy than a newer system. In fact, installing a new, energy efficient system can pay for itself over time. However, there are times when simple repairs can sufficiently prolong the life of an air conditioner so that immediate replacement of the unit is not the most sensible option.

Sometimes environmental laws determine the course of action a Denver air conditioning contractor must take when faced with malfunctioning equipment. For example, many Denver homeowners ask air conditioning contractors to repeatedly recharge air conditioning systems which are leaking refrigerant. If a comfort cooling system is releasing more than fifteen percent of its charge over the course of a year, the EPA requires the system to be repaired (through a leak detection and repair process) rather than repeatedly recharged. If the evaporator coil has numerous leaks or is severely corroded, a reputable contractor will advise the consumer to replace the unit.

Also consider the ongoing cost factor. You could save up to 60% on your energy bills with new high-efficiency equipment. You see, even if your air conditioner is only a few years old, it could be terribly inefficient by today's energy efficiency standards. Installing a new, high-efficiency cooling system can actually pay for itself in energy savings within a relatively short time.

Cooling efficiency for your air conditioner is indicated by its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating, which tells you how efficiently your unit uses electricity. In general, the higher the SEER rating, the less electricity your unit will use to cool your home. The typical SEER rating of units made before 1992 is about 6.0. In 1992, the government established the minimum cooling efficiency standard for units installed in new homes at 10.0 SEER. High-efficiency units have a SEER of at least 12.0; the maximum available is about 17.

Your Air Conditioning & Your Energy Bills

With an idea of the type of Denver air conditioner needed, it is important to consider energy costs. Air conditioners for your Denver home can use significant power, and some units are more energy-efficient than others. Comparing models to find one that saves energy while still performing effectively can save a significant amount on monthly power bills. Check the labels: most list the capacity of the model in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and give an idea of how energy-efficient the unit is. The more British Thermal Units, the greater the capacity of the unit. Additionally, some utility companies offer cash incentives to customers purchasing energy-friendly appliance replacements. Energy costs can make a huge difference when considering different air conditioners. While energy-efficient units tend to be more expensive than less productive counterparts, the utility savings may make the extra expense worth your while.

Denver homeowners can save anywhere from 10 to 40 percent in utility costs by using a high-efficiency air conditioner. The level of savings depends on what type of climate you live in, how big your home is and whether your A/C unit is properly sized.

Because the energy efficiency of air conditioners has improved greatly in the past two decades, current units can save an average of $26 per year in energy costs compared to air conditioners built in 1980.

Consequently, you may want to consider replacing an old air conditioner with a more current model to save electricity costs. However, proper maintenance should keep your unit efficient.

Client Thoughts

client comments about denver air conditioning"They came out fast and got the job done! The technician at my home was very nice and wore a company uniform with a ID badge. He wore these cute little shoe covers on his feet and used a mat to not mess up my floor. They called me back to confirm I was satisfied. (which I obviously was) I would recommend this company to anyone who asks."
